Spring 2013 TED Conference

Our apologies for being silent about Spring 2013 TED Conference that happened 17 days ago in its hometown Long Beach, CA. We’ve just been busy a little bit, however, TED Conference is one of those events that cannot be missed or left uncovered.

What is TED?

TED is a non-profit organization that nearly 30 years is bringing together the world’s greatest thinkers and doers. They present their ideas that are definitely worth spreading to more than thousand people who attend the event. TED Conference is the main event of the year, so if you consider attending it next year, you better hurry up, as it usually sells out a year in advance. But if tickets are far out of your budget, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to attend. There is no live streaming, however, all talks are recorded and shared on TED’s website within short period of time.

Spring 2013 TED Conference Overview

5 days and more than 70 speakers made this spring event an unforgettable one. People from 3 different worlds – Technology, Entertainment and Design gathered together to deliver their views and ideas on very diverse topics: from poverty and mental health issues in Ghana to eco innovations and school learning, etc. One blog post won’t be enough to mention all great research topics and presentations that have been discussed at the event. However, there was one special talk, so inspiring and brilliant, that it won TED 2013 Prize.  “To build a school in the cloud” was a wish of the TED’s prizewinner Sugata Mitra – an educational researcher, the author of “Hole In the Wall” experiments. His idea to design the future of learning by supporting children all over the world might change the entire education system to something very different and unusual.

In the meantime, while listening to great thinkers about their views on “future everything”, you can contribute right now by learning and expanding your knowledge on everyday basis. Our eco-friendly tip for you: try to take maximum from everything in life – college, professional internship or a presentation you attended few days ago. And remember that learning is a lifetime process.

Online Courses for Free??

For years, online courses have been available directly from universities. But students were required to be enrolled directly in the university and the courses cost as much as ones you would attend.

Enter Coursera. A new social entrepreneurship company partnered with the top universities in the world to offer free online courses to anyone who wants to take them.

Courses in a wide range of topics are offered, designed for students to master the material quickly. Taught by world-class professors from thirty three of the top universities around the world, these courses are perfect for improving your resume, advancing your career or just teaching you something you didn’t know before.

But, so what? Why do free classes matter? You don’t earn college credit by taking them through Coursera. They can take up to eight to ten hours of your time per week. So why take Coursera classes?

Easy answer. In this day and age, everyone needs to learn something new. Whether the class you take just teaches you how to improve your health, basic math or teaches you to how to utilize new technology, Coursera has something for everyone. You can learn more about the importance of social media marketing or how to write your own digital media and mobile app. During my time at Ingenex, I have learned the importance of keeping up with the digital transition. So why not take a class? And everyone loves getting things free… so why not get a free education from one of the best universities in the world?

It’s Been Real :)

After 10 weeks of strenuous work, long days, and impossible projects (KIDDING!) my time at Ingenex has come to a close. It’s been so great to work in such a fun work environment, learn valuable skills that I can take with me for future jobs, and get a taste of what a job in digital marketing might be like. I can’t say enough good things about this opportunity–it’s been everything I expected and more! Even though I still would like to pursue a career more focused on public relations, I’ve loved all of the work I’ve done here, and I know that that will be useful to me in a potential PR internship in the future. Luckily, I still have two years left of school, and potentially even grad school after that, so I’m not about to rush into getting a job quite yet. I would love to move to a big city following graduation and work at a big PR firm, and possibly even go back to school after working a few years and study law. If not that, maybe travel the world, who knows! All that I’m sure of is that this internship has gotten me one step closer in achieving my goals and landing a job that I truly love!!

Thanks for everything, Ingenex!!! :)

IT’S ONLY THE BEGINNING

I’ve always been a huge social media fan. I remember in high school when you had to be invited to Facebook by another one of your high school classmates, because Facebook was only supposed to be for college students at the time. Since then I have grown to love social media. I’ve documented the last 7+ years of my life on social media, and my interest only continues to grow.

I have used all kinds of social media tools, from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to Instagram and Foursquare. I love social media, and that has sparked my interest of digital media and digital marketing. I was introduced through my advisor at Michigan State University (GO GREEN!) to a class called New Media Driver’s License that was offered through the College of Communication Arts and Sciences. I heard great reviews from fellow classmates about the class, so I enrolled this past fall semester.

After the first NMDL class, I was hooked. I knew that this was stuff that I was really interested in, and I could see myself working in the digital field. The NMDL course opened my eyes to many different digital platforms. I learned about writing blogs, social media in business, and the importance of SEO and SEM, which I didn’t even know about before taking the class.

Since I completed my Driver’s License, I applied what I learned to the rest of my courses at Michigan State and completed successful advertising campaigns for my clients using key tools like Google AdWords.

During my internship this summer at Ingenex Digital marketing, I hope to sharpen and grow my knowledge and skills of digital marketing. Through my experiences at Ingenex, I look forward to learning a lot and then taking that knowledge and applying it to my future career.

Make “Back to School” Fun With These Tips and Accessories

It’s that time again for students to get back to the grind. But who says it has to be all work and no fun? Make this semester a little more interesting with some accessories that can add a little pick-me-up to each day.

Let’s start with your laptop. If you’re like me, you probably just throw your laptop in your backpack and go. Pick up a laptop carrier that suits your own lifestyle. Not only are these interesting little conversation starters, but you can also protect your laptop from damage better than in a backpack. What about protecting it from theft you ask? Check out these tips on what to do if yours gets lost or stolen. Most of them, after reading them, seem like they would be common sense. But when upset, our minds tend not to think as clearly as possible, so keep these tips handy, just in case. See how this guy got caught using a laptop he had stolen.

These are without a doubt, some of the coolest little laptop accessories I have seen. It would have been nice to stumble upon these little gems when I had a laptop that had only one USB port. Seriously, one?!  Keep these in mind when you’re looking for a USB hub. I think my favorite is the dog, but check out all ten of them.

Last but not least, here are some of the coolest little things to carry around in your bag with you. Take notes, “delete” notes, and most importantly, keep yourself entertained (between classes, not during)!

I hope everyone has a great semester!

Explore the Digital World of Marketing with MSU’s New Media Driver’s License

If you’re interested in the rapidly growing world of online marketing, this is the perfect class for you! With Michigan State University’s New Media Driver’s License, you will learn all about the different aspects of online marketing from the experts. Derek Mehraban, CEO of Ingenex Digital Marketing, shows his students the many facets of the digital world in a fun, easy to learn way.

One of the greatest things about this class is that you are learning brand new things, but a lot of it is just expanding your knowledge of media you already use. Not everyone blogs, but it’s a pretty simple thing to do and you will learn the little extras that turn your good blog into a great blog. Most of the students who take this class already have accounts on at least one social media platform. Learn how to use platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube to their full advantage.

Some things you may know little or nothing about are search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM) and Google and Yahoo! search rankings. When you successfully complete this class, you will have an understanding of these things and just how great of an impact they have on a business.

Another great thing about this class is that it is (mostly) online. From experience, I can say this is one of the most enjoyable and most useful classes I have ever taken. I loved the convenience of being able to do my work when it worked best for me.

Sign up now for the Fall 2011 New Media Driver’s License (ADV420) course!

THE NEW MEDIA DRIVERS LICENSE IS PROVIDED BY The Michigan State University Advertising, Public Relations & Retailing Deparment in Partnership with Derek Mehraban.

Save up to 80% by Renting Your Textbooks on Kindle

As it is getting closer to the beginning of the semester, many students are beginning to think about purchasing their textbooks for their classes. Every student dreads this time of year because, honestly, who wants to pay $500 for books?! If you have a Kindle, you’re in luck.

Kindle allows you to rent textbooks for up to 80% off the list price of printed textbooks. Sure, the list price is for the new, unused textbook, but if you’re a procrastinator when it comes to buying books (like myself), then you’ve probably gotten stuck buying a new book once or twice because you missed out on all of the used ones.

With Kindle’s textbook rentals, you can choose how long you would like to rent the book for from 30 to 360 days so you only pay for the time you need the book. You can also extend the rental from as little as one day, as many times as you want, or even convert your rental into a purchase.

One of the best things about this is that once you rent the book, you can access it from not only your Kindle, but your PC, Mac or mobile device.

After your rental is up, you can access your notes and highlights any time you want at kindle.amazon.com.
