1) What motivated you to have an internship at Ingenex Digital Marketing?

Derek Mehraban taught my New Media Drivers License class. The class was very interesting and helpful in making the most out of my social media pages. I was excited to learn how to apply what I learned from that class to real-life client situations.

2) What did you learn during your three months internship?

I learned about the importance of blog posts and SEO and how to write them in a way that is appealing to read. The use of links and pictures not only keep the readers’ attentions, but it adds credibility and searchability to your posts.

3) What was your favorite experience?

I liked the fact that people with all different forms of education and majors could come together and work for one company. Some of the employees were self-taught, some have computer science degrees, advertising degrees, journalism degrees, and more. But these different forms of knowledge were able to mold together and make Ingenex successful.

4) Do you think this internship will help you find a full time job?

This internship has helped me gain the writing skills and writing samples that could be appealing to a potential boss during a job interview.

5) Could you give some recommendations for anyone that would like to be an intern at Ingenex in the future?

Be ready to write. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box when writing posts. Most importantly, don’t be shy and talk to the other interns!

Facebook and Skype Editing Tricks

Today, I am going to share with you some editing “secrets” that you might not know about on Facebook and Skype. These editing tips not only allows you to fix typos, but also customize the right message you want your users to read.

Facebook Post Editing

If you are adding a link to your status update you have the ability to change the thumbnail image as well as the title and description that appears, once Facebook pulls up the original information.

Once you add the link into the blank status field, you will be able to edit any of the areas pointed by the arrows. The green arrows shows where you can click and see other options of thumbnails images. If you don’t like any of the thumbnails suggestions follow the purple arrow. By clicking on “Upload Image” you will be able to pick an image from your drive.

The yellow arrow is showing the title of the blog in bold letters. Once you click on it you will be write any calling to action message. The red arrow enables you to edit the description of the title. You can change it completely or just make any adjustments.

Once you are done, feel free to remove the URL you pasted and write your status post! These changes are very helpful when you are developing the right copy and when you are trying share the right message. Remember, you do not want to include everything on the status messages because they are suppose to be brief and concise.

Skype Message Editing

Skype users might not know, but you can actually edit the messages you send on a chat. It’s very common for people to make more mistakes writing on a chat window compared to an e-mail because your primary intention is to just keep the conversation going in a faster pace.

If you hover your mouse next to the time, you will see a drop down arrow. Once you click on it a the drop down will allow you to copy, quote, edit, remove and jump back in the history of the conversation you had with the other user.

Once you click “Edit Message” a screen will pop up and you can make the changes right there and then. See image below:

After you click “Save” you are all set! The other user will know however that you edit the message by the indication of the little pencil next to the time.

This handy feature is great especially if you don’t want any misinterpretation in a conversation, and Skype has been used more and more often by digital marketing agencies to communicate with its clients.

I hope you find these tips useful!

Gmail introduces tabs!

Keeping your e-mail organized is challenge for many people. Recently Gmail has create tabs that allows us to separate the emails in five different categories: Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums.

The new navigation layout makes your inbox more functional based on the relevance of the content of your incoming message. This is how Gmail divided up its five tabs to make it easier for users to view and organized their emails using categories.

Meet the Five Tabs!

  1. Primary: In this tab you will receive messages from your family and friends, work and other  message that would not fit into the categories below.

  2. Social: This categories it is focused on the messages and notifications you might receive from other social platforms and networks such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

  3. Promotions: This tab is designed for you to receive offers, deals and other promotional materials that you have signed up for.

  4. Updates: In this tab you will get notifications such as bank statements and receipts.

  5. Forums: This tab is designed specifically for messages from discussion boards, online groups and mailing lists you have subscribed to. Since categories might not be relevant to every person, Gmail allows users to customize which tabs shows up on their dashboard by clicking on the “+” sign.

Directing E-mails

If you receive an update that might going to your Primary tab, don’t worry! It is possible to move emails from specific senders into the exactly tabs you want. To do this, you should right-click on an email located under the incorrect tab heading. Then you chose the “Move to tab” option, then pick the tab of your preference. A shortcut to this tip is to simply drag and drop the messages you want.

Not ready for the change?

If for some reason you don’t like the layout and design, or you simply just want to use the old format, it is possible to revert back. All you need to do is click again the “+” icon to the right of the tab and uncheck every box (except the “Primary”) and you are done! If you want the tabs again, just click on “Settings” (gear icon) and select “Configure inbox”, it’s that simple!

Gmail_PlusSign
I still wish we could rename or create our own tabs, but I can’t deny that this new layout will make people’s lives much easier. So check out your current gmail account or create a gmail www.gmail.com. I hope you find these tips helpful and now you can make your e-mail a lot more organized and tailored to your needs.

Happy Birthday #Ingenex7!

Yesterday, Ingenex Digital Marketing celebrated seven years of successful hard work by throwing a birthday bash. This special moment couldn’t have been celebrated in without the family and friends that are so supportive and motivational for us to continue to do our job.

Ingenex's Friends

The band Corndaddy brought the great sound of country rock to the party. Inspired by Willie Nelson, Buck Owens, the Byrds and other classic groups, the refreshing music chilled out our guests from the hot weather.

Corndaddy

The parents brought their babies and children making the event very family oriented. Parents didn’t have to worry about their children as they took over the conference room and watched Disney movies and ate delicious food from Katherine’s Catering services. With great drinks we were able to toast with the Ingenex family in the new office.

Watching the Incredbiles

This celebration is shows that entrepreneurship and dedication goes a long way with the dedication of a team that roll up the sleeves every single day to meet the needs of their clients. With this spirit and mentality, I am certain we’ll see many more celebrations in the future!

The Digital Bus: A unique experience

My three month internship at Ingenex Digital Marketing is flying by! Right now, I am approaching the end of my second month, and the company has recently launched its Digital Bus Summer Tour of 2013.

Ingenex Team

Ingenex Team

The goal of the Digital Bus is to promote our services and brand awareness via digital social outreach as we engage in activities and events on our summer schedule. During the summer tour we hope to connect with  people through the use of hashtags in order to create conversation and establish new relationships.

The Digital Bus visits awesome places beyond Michigan’s borders. Our 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia Camper also travels to Illinois and New York. We encourage people that see us on the road or in person to take a photo and tweet us using the hashtag #DigitalBus so we can interact with them!

For each summer tour, our team wears personalized t-shirts to help us brand and promote the bus as well as our company. This experience allows us to combine the digital experience with the real world and connect with our community.

I’ll try not to be biased, but the 1972 Volkswagen we have is extremely cool! The Digital Bus provides a charming and exclusive identity to our company. Promoting the digital services we provide via our vintage van is very ironic, but in my opinion that’s why Ingenex is such a unique agency to work for. Though we are digitally immersed in our daily work, all team members are extremely social, outgoing and this opportunity allows us to combine our skills and personalities.

This is also an opportunity for us as a team to get to know each other better in different environments. The Digital Bus is an experience that not many agencies can provide, and I am very happy for the opportunity to be part of this experience.

News flash for your smartphone!

More and more photos are being taken every day since the majority of smartphones have become our digital cameras. Many cameras have great pixel qualities; you can edit it and with Instagram even add effects to make your photo unique. However, there is still one problem with dark photos – the lack of a good flash. The evening is one of the times people socialize and interact the most and if you there isn’t good lighting around, your photos won’t turn out great.

Well, the problem might be over. The iblazr mobile phone flash is developing a product to be compatible with iOS and Android devices that gives the ability to take higher quality pictures at night. Another great aspect of this product is that it works effectively for both photos and videos.

As soon as people start using this product, we should be seeing a lot more pictures and videos in social networks taken in the evening. This new feature comes at a great time for Vine, as well as Instagram, who has launched video sharing capabilities.

People will be able to take more pictures during music concerts, inside a movie theater, and during special occasions like evening fireworks during the fourth of July and New Years.

This external accessory is connected in the audio jack of your smartphone and it also has its own battery so it won’t consume your smartphone’s power. The iblzar flash is only 10mm thick. It would be perfect for digital marketing agencies especially those that might be on a budget and are still looking to give their employees the ability to take quality photos and videos with their smartphone.

There is no official date set for the release of this product or of the price of this product, but this is something people can look forward to. Do you think you would use this new accessory? If so, share your thoughts below!

Do you know how to write for social media?

Today, I want to talk about copywriting! In college, students are exposed to many different courses to enroll in. As an intern at Ingenex Digital Marketing, I have the opportunity to put in practice my skills and knowledge from college but it is also opening up my eyes about other courses I should have taken before graduating.

Like the majority of the students, everyone had to take a writing class, but in the field of advertising it is very important to have sharp copywriting skills. I learned copywriting through my past and current work experience, but if you have a chance to take courses beforehand, do it! By taking a copywriting course these skills are transferable to many other jobs and in the field of advertising it will make you look professional.

Sending tweets and posting tons of statuses on Facebook does not make you a social media expert. There are many guidelines to follow when writing for social media. In copywriting for social media, the voice, language and tone varies from one platform to another, from brand to brand and other aspects in between.

In the advertising and digital marketing industry, creativity is the soul of successful campaigns. Copywriters need to be flexible, creative and quick in their feet, especially in the field of social media, as there are constant changes and rapid communication in the online communities.

“Copywriting for social media is an interesting and deep topic because there are so many different channels, mechanisms and purposes. It’s almost like you have to learn a separate business … there’s the ad business … there’s PR … there’s social. Each slightly different.” said social media expert, Jason Falls.

With so many mediums like Twitter, Facebook, the ultimate goal is for your audience to click and respond your online message. Communication on social media outlet is a two-way channel if not more, this one of the reasons it is crucial to be human when crafting your message.

To be a well rounded copywriter, I encourage you to learn about the techniques and practices of copywriting for SEO and learn about the importance and value of keywords as they will play a major role in allowing your website to show up on search results.

I also recommend the New Media Drivers Licence course. This course gave me a competitive advantage when applying for jobs and internships. Best of luck and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me!

Are you safe online?

Millions of Americans go online everyday and don’t realized how vulnerable their information can be due to the lack of security of some websites, an increasing number of phishing scams and the lack of control from their private settings.

Last year 12 millions Americans fell victim to the fraud and had their identities stolen. Today we are going to give a few quick tips on how to protect yourself from these cyber crimes. Social Media became one of the favorites “playground” for thieves and malicious virus to steal your personal information.

1. Passwords: When is the last time you changed your password? This is a very basic but important step to take but it is important change your password from time to time. Some websites allow you to see if the password you are entering is harder to crack, by stating if it is “strong” or “very strong”. Don’t make them simple like your pet’s name or “123”, but if the website allows you to include numbers, capital letter and symbols, do it! Make sure your password is “strong”, “very strong”; “very good” or “excellent”. Cyber thieves can easily identify your password if you ever made it public. On this note make sure the privacy settings on your social networks are well secure.

2. Emails: NEVER email your credit card number or Social Security number to anyone. Malicious hackers are always looking for this crucial information once they get into your account. Be very careful opening attachments and downloading files, even if you know the source.

3. Online banking: The same way you check your e-mail on a daily basis, you should monitor the activity of your debt and credit cards for any suspicious transactions. If you feel, that your account was compromised and you had your information stolen, contact your bank immediately. It is also recommended that online, you should use credit cards instead of debit cards, since debit cards do not have as a strong protection against fraud compared to credit. You also should contact your bank and ask if they have free software to protect your online banking.

4. Wireless connections: If you have a wireless router at home, make sure to make it secure by including a password, this way a third party won’t be able to access your signal connection. Some people also enable the encryption to scramble the information you send back and forth online.

To learn more about other steps you can take in case your information is stolen, click here. It is very important to share this information with your friends and family members as some of them might have your personal information stored in their computers as well. Keep an eye out and stay safe!

Art in the Park, Art in our Lives!

This past weekend, I had the great opportunity to help with the social media coverage of the premiere art fair in Tecumseh, MI called Art in the Park with other volunteers. This event was hosted by the Community Arts of Tecumseh in a two day event. Our team walked around the tents of the twenty-one different artists, took pictures of their work and spoke with them for a few minutes and disseminated the content on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Art_Tecumseh

I was amazed by the variety and the skills of these local artists. As I spoke with them about their art work, you could just sense their genuine love for what they do and how rewarding it was to hear compliments from the guests. Many of the artist drew their inspirations from random objects, the places they have lived and nature; others by organic shapes, simple doodles and everyday objects. Many of them have been putting their talented hands and minds to work for at least 10 years.

This was also an opportunity for children to see art on a very personal level in everyday objects. The art fair welcomed all kinds of art, such as paintings, mosaics, woodworks, jewelry, etc.

The variety of colors and designs were absolutely fantastic. Artists made art seem so simple and showed us that everyone should explore their inner artistic side. The main message of this experience for me is: “Art is about family and community”. It was beautiful to see the support from the community and the visitors appreciating the value and beauty of art.

Artwork

There is a saying: “Earth without art is eh”. – This proves to be awfully true as these artists showed how beautiful and personal the world can be through art. The pure process the artists developed to make their art works was admirable.

Among many of the artists I would like to highlight Anne Flora from Flora Works; she has a learning center in Tecumseh dedicated to fiber arts and tactile designs. Pattyg Designs makes gorgeous fused glass jewelry, I am certain you would find a perfect gift for your loved one here!

Karen Trigaux from KLT mosaics is inspired by the contemporary style. You will quickly fall in love quickly with her work. If you are looking for handbags, totes, paintings and much more check out Meant To Be Art.

Tents If you are into the artistic metal sculptures email Tim Stachlewitz from Metalcraft by Moose and if you enjoy woodworks you must look for River Raisin Woodworks. Kari Hybl Morningstar from Imagine That Originals creates custom art painted on rock, wood & more. You can reach her via email.

Although it is summer is approaching, for next winter, I strongly recommend checking the warm afghans, knit wears, scrubbies and more from Gooseberry Crafts. Looking for quality photography? Visit David Schamberger Photography for some impeccable creativity.

Looking for a new vase or mug? You must consider Mad Pottery Studio by Lindsay Mylek and Brent Douge. Their work is outstanding and extremely professional. Last but not least, meet Lu-c-Lu The Clown. Lucy Fundaro puts more than paint in your child’s face; she puts a smile as well.

What is Augmented Reality?

Is there such a thing as “too much” technology? A piece of technology that is getting stronger in the market is augmented reality. Some people describe this technology as “futuristic” and “mind-blowing”. In the next few years we might see a trend among the new digital marketing services. I am curious to hear what you think of it. Let’s start by defining the meaning of augmented reality.

According to Mashable: “Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data”. This emerging technology has tapped into professional sports and most recently it will be helping us complete tasks that we might be clueless.

Imagine if your sport ticket could provide you with a lot more information besides where you are sitting. In India, cricket fans can activate this technology using their tickets and they are able to receive live traffic updates around the stadium, parking information and much more.

In Italy, a tech firm Inglobe Technologies launched an app using augmented reality, giving you the perfect skills of a mechanic to fix your car. Depending on the seriousness of the issue you might be able to fix the care on your own with the help of this ingenious app. From what we have seen in the news, this emerging technology is embracing the convenience and practical aspects people might be looking for. Augment reality is becoming the new problem solving technology in the next few years.

I do believe that this technology could be the game changer in the digital business and very soon different businesses will be tapping into them to interact and engage their customers on a whole different level.

What about you? Where would you like to see augmented reality being used? Do you think people will welcome this emerging technology positively? Comment on this post below with your opinion.
